GAMIFICATION

In the model of motivation, one of the contextual factor that contributes to employee’s satisfaction and engagement is Job Design (Kinicki & Fugate, 2011). There are numerous ways to modify job design which can managers do. For instance in this case, Prime Minister of Canada, Mr. Stephen Harper, believes that “Gamification” could encourage employees and citizen to improve motivation, engagement, and problem-solving (Beeby, 2015).

Coleen Volk, deputy secretary to the federal cabinet of Canada, wrote a memo entitled “Harnessing the Power of Gamification”. In the memo, he mentioned about Gamification’s potential to increase public service renewal activities and Gamification as a tool in engaging citizens. The government is prepared to adopt this system in the next 5 years (Beeby, 2015).

Gamification means to use game-based design principles like scoring points, or even gained experienced (EXP) and level up in training and study approach. There are so many things that could achieve by using this game-based design principles like collaboration, goals, feedback and repetition, and game mechanics like currency, persistence, progression and scarcity that could drive behavior change of the players (Baechler, 2011). The gamification system is designed for adults to make better decisions and improve performances, so it has different approach compare to the usual children’s games.

Games have long been consider as the new approach to help learning process. Sue Baechler (2011) in her article “Using Games to Improve Performance and Results” supports the idea of using games to develop skills that can be used in working environment. If we compare it to the traditional ways where the worker put into the classroom for hours, Gamification looks promising.
