Mr. Goodyear, a 25 year old single male that works as auto mechanic. He has no siblings and he says
he has been a loner all his life. Mr. Goodyear attempted suicide at the age of 16, due to being bullied in
school. He complains of rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, shaking, sweating, chills, hot flashes and
chest pain. Mr. Goodyear also experiences dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Mr. Goodyear
and his girlfriend of 5 years just recently broke up. He feels the break up is not the cause, because he
broke up with his girlfriend first. He continues to work and is currently trying to start his own business.
Mr. Goodyear went to his primary care doctor and was prescribed Xanax to see if it would help. After 3
weeks of treatment the drug seemed to help but he complained about hearing voices telling him to
commit suicide. Mr. Goodyear also has been drinking heavily mixing the alcohol with the medication.
Mr. Goodyear has recently been showing up to work late and hangover. His manager noticed the
situation and threating to fire him if this continues to happen.
Cognitive theoretical perspective concerns itself with the study of mental processes wherein behavior
is examined typically for the primary use as an avenue into the underlying mental processes, in the same
manner as would a physicist would infer the force of gravity from the behavior of objects in the world
(Robinson-Riegler, 2008). Cognitive psychology is a sub discipline of psychology which works from the
cognitive perspective theory using scientific method in an attempt to answer fundamental questions
about how the mind works such as in automatic processing, metacognition, retrieval blocks, mental sets,
divided attention, memory, language, and reasoning. Alternative approaches to cognitive psychology
have been mostly influenced by Descartes where in the mind and body is treated as two separate
