Ninety percent of teenagers get less than the recommended nine hours of sleep at night and ten percent get less than six hour of sleep. Many factors of this are staying up studying, doing extracurricular activities, and the use of cell phones, computers, and tablets at night. But, after long periods of time with so little sleep it begins to take its toll on you. It can affect all aspects of your life from, school, to sports, hanging out with friends, to even the way you look.

School is one of the main reasons for sleep deprivation. With all the homework your teachers give you and extracurricular activities its really difficult to get the recommended hours of sleep every night. You stay up doing projects and writing essays for your english teacher and don’t end up getting to bed until one or two, and then school starts at around eight or nine. Another big reason for sleep deprivation is the use of electronics at night. Most teenagers stay up playing games or are scrolling through social websites such as facebook or instagram.

Lack of sleep can affect just about any aspect of your life.It can limit your ability to learn, listen, concentrate and solve problems. You may even forget important information like names, numbers, and your homework. Sleep deprivation can also lead to aggressive or inappropriate behavior such as yelling at your friends or being impatient with your teachers or family members.

What most people don’t know is that it affects the way you look as well. It makes you more prone to pimples and can contribute to acne and other skin problems which as a teenager is already something most people worry about. It can also cause you to eat too much or eat unhealthy foods like sweets and fried foods that lead to weight gain. Sleep can also contribute to illnesses, not using equipment safely or driving drowsy. It can heighten the effects of alcohol and possibly increase...
