Abstract

In an effort to reduce gang activity over flowing from other cities to mine, I have created an outline that will discuss facts about gangs, how one is able to identity gang members or activity as well as strategic planning countering gang activity. The paper will also address known facts about gang members and how they target individuals.

When did Gangs start?

Street gangs in the United States date back to the 1700’s if not less. They have a long and complex history of how it all started and how it will evolve to so much more than just “hanging out with the homies (a term used to describe friends).” The history of gangs is certainly unknown but according to one website, it dates back to when Europeans migrated to the East of States in hope for a better life (knowgangs.com). Quickly, gangs began to unfold and become more common with in the 19th century.

Types of Gangs

There are different types of known gangs that range from different age, race, ethnicity, color, neighborhood, city, global location, region, common friends, etc. and the list goes on and on. To better understand, one can compare gangs to different types of clubs that are in any school. Though there are various definitions for gangs, gangs are known to be a group of individuals that band together and hold an identity or common purpose such as success, respect, or profit (Gainsville P.D.). The term “gangs” has now transformed itself in to speaking about street gangs that are usually involved in organized crime that have leadership and a hierarchy.

Why Join?

In much belief, many individuals join gangs because they have a sense of loneliness with in their own home and seek attention elsewhere. Common reasons that juveniles and adults seek to be with a gang are because they would like to join a group, protection, money, simply bored and look for...
