CASE 3 BUILDING A COALITION
PART I:
GROUP DEVELOPMENT
The Woodson Foundation is teaming up with the public school system in Washington, D.C., to improve student outcomes.
The selection of appropriate team members is crucial for the success of the project. The members of the team need to work together towards the common goal in order to achieve it.
The Woodson Foundation, the NCPIE and the schools need to know that there are five stages of group development:
1. Forming Stage
2. Storming Stage
3. Norming Stage
4. Performing Stage
5. Adjourning Stage
Currently they are in the forming stage, which is characterized by much uncertainty. If the development group is aware of how groups are expected to operate there will be a high probability of success and effectiveness during the process; and so by knowing these different stages the members can handle better the different situations that might arise while going thru the different stages such as intragroup conflicts; but once the group is formed people start to resolve their differences, appreciate colleagues' strengths, and respect the authority of the leader. By then the group can be focused on performing the tasks to be able to reach the common goal that brought them together in the first place.
PART II:
PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION
The schools have problems with truancy, low student performance and crime.
As important as being aware of these five stages, will be to be aware of the group properties: Roles, Norms, Status, Sizes, Cohesiveness and Diversity.
All members of the group should be clear on their specifics roles so that everyone knows about the expected behavior from the assigned position and at the same time all members know what behavior is acceptable and what is not.
PART III:
RETROSPECTIVE EVALUATION
The possible solution is to create an after school program and develop a new agency that integrated both organizations.
