Term List – 1 Bronze Age to Funan and Chenla
Dongson – (500 – 112 BCE ) – One of the two SEA bronze age culture famous for their lost wax technique of bronze casting and bronze drums. Influences from DongSon culture were discovered across SEA as drums were found in various dig sites which could suggest trade network
Tongkin – The Northern region of VN where a large amount of bronze drums were discovered, it was believed to be the origin of Dongson culture.
Banchiang (500 – c. 100BCE) – One of the two SEA bronze age culture famous for their pottery and ceramic products, these products were often found in burial with important figures. The exclusive pattern suggested advance molding and decorating techniques
Sanskrit – Ancient langue of Hinduism found in Funan which recorded the early history of SEA. They were considered influences from India.
Funan (357-539) – Historical Chinese record contain information on Funan- the Southern peninsula of SEA. Traces of Hinduism and Buddhism were found very early in these areas. Also found were the Sanskrits. Name given by the Chinese
Kaundinya – He is a Brahmin who established Funan after his marriage with princess Soma. He was believed to have come from India.
Jayavarman – King of Funan who was mentioned in the Sanskrits. He built temples dedicated to Vishnu and spreaded Hinduism in SEA. He fought and won many great battles.
Chenla (6th c. – late 8th c.) – Chinese historical records mention Chenla as the southern region of SEA, which today consisted mostly modern Cambodia. Chenla’s inhabitant consisted of the Khmer who broke free from the control of Funan
“Kambhuja” – the land of Kambu. This land is modern Cambodia and originally founded by Jayavarman II
