Introduction

Employers have significant responsibilities that go beyond hiring and training employees. They need to make sure employees are motivated so they perform efficiently and lead competition. Employee satisfaction plays a crucial role in motivation and productivity and depends on numerous factors, including access to physical resources and organizational structure (Corporate Executive Board, 2003). Employees satisfied with their workplace and the positions they hold have more reasons to contribute to a shared work ethic and work hard while encouraging others to do the same. Likewise, low levels of job satisfaction lead to productivity drop (Corporate Executive Board, 2003).

To measure productivity is easy, using the performance metrics or the organizational objectives. However, to assess employee satisfaction is a difficult task. One way is through a survey where employees have to rate different aspects of the work; this is called attitude appraisal (Corporate Executive Board, 2003). Others implement an employee evaluation and ask colleagues and managers to evaluate particular individuals’ motivation at work. The comparison of all measurements applied over time allows managers to identify problems in employee satisfaction and motivation (hence productivity), as well as improvements.

Managers use a plethora of techniques and tools to promote employee motivation and satisfaction, to improve productivity. It is believed that making employees feel more comfortable in their jobs affects their motivation and satisfaction. Also, flexible work hours, employee benefits, and recognition for excellent performance and achievement are all powerful tools that help improve job satisfaction.
