Love Like Winter

Movie metaphors are a phenomenon that is quickly rising. Movies like Narnia or Lord of the Rings, that showcase an evident influence of Christian symbolism, make it almost hard to keep in mind that every movie has some kind of deeper theme. However, this is a movement heavily encouraged by producers and writers. As a result there are subliminal messages in movies one would never expect; Disney’s animated musical comedy, Frozen, is a clear example of this. As Mark Pinsky puts it, Frozen “might be the most Christian movie I have seen this year” (Pinsky, Mark). By advocating Christian principles through its characters and plot, Frozen implies that humans are born into sinful nature, that there is a love beyond human boundaries and that sacrificial love saves.

Frozen is the story of sisters, princesses, Elsa and Anna. These two are not like other children since Elsa has a secret ice power. Growing up, the sisters are always playing together until one day Elsa accidentally hits younger sister Anna with her ice powers. After this, their parents decide that it is best for everyone to isolate Elsa until she learns to control her powers. When the girls become young adults, their parents die. Elsa becomes the queen of Arendelle and there is a big celebration. This is the first time Anna sees her sister in a very long time. During the celebration, Anna accepts to marry a prince whom she just met. When Elsa hears the news, she loses control over her powers, exposes herself to the town, and decides to run away, leaving an eternal winter behind her. All the townspeople start to judge their new queen, and Anna claims responsibility for Elsa’s actions. Anna decides to embark on an adventure to rescue her sister and bring summer back.
