Farm Animal Torture

There is nothing wrong with a person choosing to eat meat, but what is wrong is how the animals many get their meat from are tortured. Many people do not think about how the animal is killed when they are eating it. “Animals are raised in very close pens, often in the dark, and few of them ever see their mothers or the light of day” (Thiroux and Krasemann, 2009, p.406). This is torture and a reason many people choose not to eat meat and often become vegetarian or vegan. Many people that hold the carnivore position may say that the animal is dead anyway and what does it matter how they died. The fact of the matter is that do the animals that many love to eat have to be tortured? A person holding the moderate position would argue that it is not necessary to torture an animal. The following quote is an example of why people should show compassion, “If we crammed eight or 10 people into an elevator to the point where they couldn't walk, they could barely turn around, we would think that was a form of torture. Yet on factory farms in this country, animals are being tortured in this way” (Inskeep, 2008). In conclusion, a person can enjoy eating meat, but they should be aware of the torture that the animals go through.
