How to Make Campus More Safe

Do you remember a Rowan University student was killed during a campus robbery two years ago? It’s unbelievable, but it’s true. In recent years, more and more unsafe events happened on campus, involving fighting and drinking. When are faced with these problems, what can the college do? College should pay more focus on campus safety.

William J. Bennett, former secretary of education, gave a speech to every college president, which said: “Welcome back for your studies, but no drugs on campus. None. Period.” But in fact, it didn’t give campus safety an actual effect, because here is a terrible thing which is reported in New York Times. An instructor in Stanford University was fired, because he carried illegal drugs and alcoholic beverages on campus. In particular, he had sold illegal drugs for students, and he also sold alcoholic beverages for students under twenty-one. In addition, there are few guys buy drugs via illegal channels and sold drugs to which one need but cannot buy it with a high price. Or the one who are over twenty-one buy alcoholic drinks in place the one who under twenty-one, and take the extra money from this. All of them are serious, because they not only break the law, but also affect the campus more safe.

Why does the law have legal minimum drinking age? Because legal minimum drinking age give college students a limit. During the college time, students age always between 19 to 23 years old. Why does the law need to limit drinking? For there are lots of unsafe factors after drinking, such as driving after over drinking, it’s easy to get into an accident. As a reported in society magazine, most accidents are caused by excessive drinking. Because of alcohol can affect the brain, so the behavior may become out of control. Alcohols lead campus unsafe easily.
