Creative Young Brains

In 2006 TED talk that was named as “Ken Robinson says schools kill creativity.” British educationalist, author, advisor Ken Robinson argues that the system should be changed to develop students’ creativity at schools. Only following the subjects, copying writings that are on the board to the notebook and memorizing them are requirements of today’s schools, but these are not solutions for developing creativity. Robinson says that students are frightened of being wrong. And the result is that people are educated out of their creative capacities. If someone is not prepared to be wrong, s/he cannot come up with original ideas. In the future, they run their companies like this. Today, the schools do not always do a good job to encourage creativity. According to Robinson, these schools are teaching students how to get the right answer. Therefore, the most successful students of the schools are the ones who do the best job of avoiding mistakes, but today’s world needs creative people who have different and original ideas. The speaker has a good point on creativity at schools. So, I totally agree with the opinion adopted in the talk.

I agree with the opinion that practical learning is just as important as academic learning. All students’ need is not only academic learning, but also practical learning because one of the most important points of creativity is learning by doing. For example, learning a topic of physics or chemistry by doing an experiment about them is more beneficial than learning them by only writing or reading. According to John Swift and John Steers (1999, pp.1), practice develops the ability to use materials and techniques intelligently, imaginatively, sensuously and experimentally in order to respond to objects and ideas creatively through personally meaningful in school, later life or professionally.
