Gender Wage Discrimination

Betsy was thrilled about her new job as a personal assistant to an executive. She had recently graduated from college and was ready to get into the world and begin living the life she had always dreamed. On her first day of work, she arrived early and reported to Ms. Baker in Human Resources. After filling out her obligatory “New Hire Forms,” she was escorted to a room where she was placed in front of a TV set and a video was started. She had to live through the boring ordeal of a presentation on rules and regulations as pertains to employment. In the video she noticed that the company had strict rules about what to do if you thought you were being discriminated against, or sexually harassed. She discovered that there is a zero tolerance rule for this sort of thing at her new place of employment. Betsy was aware that reporters were talking on the news shows, about all the cases of gender based wage discrimination in the country. She was very glad that the company she would be working for was not going to be discriminating against her, and cared enough to encourage the reporting of anything rising to that level.

Problem Analysis

Betsy is just one of thousands of young women who are starting their careers, thinking they may be held back by an unscrupulous company that is out to pay women less, because they are women. Where is this idea coming from that there is a “Wage Gap” between what men and women are paid? Our media is telling us daily, that a woman earns 77 cents, for every 1 dollar a man earns. Gender Wage Discrimination is a major topic of discussion in the country. If it is true that companies are intentionally discriminating against women, what is their motivation? Are they mean spirited, greedy? If it is not true that women are being discriminated against, why do the media and liberal politicians try to make us believe it is? Are they just lying?
