World Civilization II
Dr. Trybus
In the twentieth century we begin to witness the rise of nationalism and a series of revolutions occurring against government and those who are in political control; the first spark that led to revolt against the West and Western control was the West losing in World War I. After the loss in World War I many of the eastern states and countries began to “doubt and unrest against Western political domination.”1 Also we begin to see figures like Mohandas Gandhi; people who preached for independence against foreign control.
Another of these leaders leaders was Sutan Sjahrir who, “was a leader in the Indian nationalist movement and served as prime minister of the Republic of Indonesia in the 1950’s.”2 Sutan Sjahrir, himself believed that the reason India was not progressive was because, “there was an intellectual gap between him and his people.”3 He said that this gap is cause by a “lack of realization between Indian people that there focus should be toward clarity, and objectivity not the mystical.”4 I can relate with Sutan Sjahrir, I do believe for a society to grow it most work towards progression and not wait and believe on mystical stories but in science. Sutan Sjahrir also goes to explain that the intellectuals are “closer to Europe or America in the way they view progression and change.”5 Then he gives a counter argument saying that people in India believe in the Eastern spirit wanting a higher spirituality instead of materialism of the West which Sutan Sjahrir is not convinced neither would I, we all want progression and new technology.
