Case Study of Harley Davidson
Harley-Davidson is last surviving American motorcycle manufacturing company established in 1903. It is specialized in production of heavyweight motorcycles.
From 1903 it was very successful company till 70’s. at that time they were concentrating on mass production due to that reason they started loosing their quality of motorcycles and their company was falling downwards. After years HD has lost most of its market shares.
In 1981 Vaughn Beals, Willie G. Davidson and their twelve investors decided to buy the company in 80 millions dollars and after that they climbed again by applying Supply Chain Management in their company, That was the turning point for HD. This shows importance of SCM.
What is Supply Chain Management
Supply Chain Management is nothing but flow of material from source of material to the end customers. As we can understand that name SCM shows this is something related to chain process. One thing is joint with other, it include purchasing, transportation manufacturing, warehousing, customer services etc.
“Supply Chain Management is the management of upstream and downstream relationship with suppliers and customer value at less cost to the supply chain as a whole” (Source: Chritopher, M., Logistics and Supply Chain Management FT Prentice Hall, 1988)...
