Sternberg’s Theory of Love has seven stages and all are very different and have different concepts. Each stage is experienced at some point in many peoples life.

• Liking in this case is not used in a trivial sense; Sternberg says that this intimate liking characterizes true friendships, in which a person feels a bond, warmth and a closeness with another but not intense passion or long-term commitment. This stage can be classified as a friend or best friend. Even a family member can be considered in this stage.

• Infatuated love something that is felt as “love at first sight”. It must have passion in order to continue. Someone explaining that they are excited to see him, and when she sees him she cant breathe.

• Empty love is having commitment but nothing else. Like a loveless marriage, no passion or intimacy but no one else in the marriage besides the two people. Not cheating, or seeking out other people while still married. Arranged marriages are what we see this stage is in.

• Romantic Love having passion and intimacy but not being committed to one another. A couple that is very physical with one another and has undeniable passion but not committing to a relationship and being “exclusive”.

• Companionate Love this is often found in marriages in which the passion has gone out however a deep commitment and affection remain. This is generally a personal relation you build with somebody you share your life with, but with no sexual or physical desire. It is stronger than friendship because of the extra element of commitment. The love ideally shared with family members, as the love between deep friends or those who spend a lot of time together in any asexual but friendly relationship.

• Fatuous love is a courtship and marriage in which commitment is motivated largely by passion, without the stabilizing influence of intimacy.
