A Drug-Free Workplace

Many employers are requiring mandatory drug testing for applicants and current employees. Drug use continues to rise and employers need to take precautions to sustain a sound work environment. In many jobs, even the smallest mistake could be critical, or even lethal. In organizations today, employers are looking for ways to ensure the employees they hire are dependable. One process to gain insight of a potential employee is to prescreen for drug use. Larger businesses require a potential employee to pass a drug test as a stipulation of his employment. HD Supply Waterworks is one such business that passing a drug screening is mandatory for employment. Drug-Free workplace programs will help to improve safety in the workplace and employee health in any organization, regardless of the industry. This paper will discuss whether HD Supply Waterworks has defined, clearly, their drug-free policy, and implemented a comprehensive drug awareness and education program.

Drug-Free Work Environment

HD Supply Waterworks is a drug-free work environment and they state it clearly in the employee handbook given to each new hire. The employee must sign the page at the back of the handbook acknowledging he has have read and understood the policies of the company. Human resources keep the signed acknowledgment in the employees file. Businesses have numerous reasons today to have drug-free workplace policies in place. Drugs and alcohol use in the workplace can slow productivity, cause accidents, absences from work, and increase the cost of liability insurance as well as health insurance.

Defined Policies

HD Supply Waterworks has random drug screenings for all of their employees. Employees do not know when they have to take a drug test. A computer program randomly selects the employee numbers then prints out the report. These employees must leave immediately for a drug screening....
