Introduction

Beginning college is typically the most exciting event in a young adult's life. The ability to move away from home, be independent and make new friends is exhilarating for many. However, there is an epidemic on college campuses today which is shattering the image of the carefree first years of adult life at college. The epidemic is sexual assault and a primary causal factor is the excessive drinking 44% of all college students participate in each year (Weschler & Nelson, 2008). This crisis must be further investigated, resources allocated, and students, both drinkers and assault victims treated if this vulnerable population is to fulfill their bright promise.

Conclusion

It is clear from numerous studies, first hand accounts, and the increasing response from college campuses that alcohol fueled sexual assault is a severe problem across the United States. The negative outcomes which result, including increased rates of dropout, psychological disorders, and other professional, personal, and academic difficulties are traumatic and unacceptable. The college culture which fuels the drinking binges and looks the other way when sexual assault occurs must be eliminated. There are proactive measures schools, communities and individuals can take to turn the tide on this issue. If these public and private parties can dedicate the financial and emotional resources to trainings, more effective prevention and treatment programs, and effective legislation against binge drinking and assault, the rewards will be immeasurable. Now is the time to move forward on these measures and ensure that a new era of education in our collegiate education system begins.
