Human Resources at Hewlett-Packard Case

1. The “HP Way” is rooted in creating a collaborative, team-oriented culture, where everyone is focused on a single vision. Specifically, Hewlett-Packard (HP) is working toward getting employees on the same page, to agree on objectives and to understand the goals of the company. The key HP objectives are: profit, customers, fields of interest, growth, “our people,” management and citizenship. These objectives or commitment systems became the guiding force for setting business objectives for HP, and for creating core values and a management style that would guide the human resource approach throughout the entire company. The commitment systems used by HP decentralized decision making, have high employee involvement and high levels of autonomy and empowerment.

HP values are the focus of the Hewlett-Packard Way. HP’s affirmed values are not dissimilar from most major companies. What makes the HP Way unique, though, is the importance with which values are treated as a management tool. They are not spread by sloganeering rather, the values serve as criteria for daily decision-making and advancement. An employee working the “HP Way” shows the technique of value-based management and lifts everyone above trivial concerns to focus on those that are truly important. These primary values consist of: having trust and respect for individuals; having a focus on high level of achievement and contribution; conducting business with uncompromising integrity; achieving common objectives through team work and the encouragement of flexibility and innovation.

There are numerous personnel policies and internal structures that HP has implemented to support these core values and objectives while also having a link between their HR practices and the firms performance.
