Part I: Motivation, Emotion, and Behavior

Explain the relationships between motivation, emotion, and behavior. How does emotion affect motivation? Give an example of a specific behavior and the motivators and emotions that can be behind that behavior. Your response should be at least 300 hundred words.

“There is no question whether emotion plays a part of decision making. It plays a part in all behavior” –Adam King. Emotion, behavior and motivation are all interchangeable components of our human intellect. Of those three, emotion is the catalyst in which behavior is affected and motivation is inspired. Motivation in its simplest form is a state of desire within our minds. Motivation can be classified as a type of emotion in itself but is usually not triggered without another primary emotion influencing it. Emotions can be derived biologically or environmentally. Emotion can be defined as a complex psycho physiological experience that is caused by the mind interacting with biochemical and environmental changes.

Emotion is a direct cause for motivation. For example, say Lenny has been picked on at school for over two months. Last week Lenny was hit by his classmate Ralph, and everyone else in the class laughed. That incident has caused Lenny a great deal of sadness which has developed into full blown anger. Now Lenny is out to prove he can take care of himself, and he is constantly displaying a tough attitude around his classmates. In short, Lenny’s anger motivated him to develop a different mentality in which his behavior was affected. “To probe for unconscious determinants of behavior and then define man in their terms exclusively, ignoring his overt behavior altogether, is a greater distortion than ignoring the unconscious completely” – Dr Willard Gaylin.
