Obesity is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, certain types of cancer, and type 2 diabetes. “Overweight and obese people have an increased incidence of heart disease, and thus fall victim to heart attack, congestive heart failure, sudden cardiac death, angina, and abnormal heart rhythm more often than those that maintain a healthy body mass index... More than 80 percent of people with Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease, are obese or overweight.” (www.obesityinamerica.org)

According to the CDC website, during the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. In 2009, only Colorado and the District of Columbia had a prevalence of obesity less than 20%. Thirty-three states had a prevalence equal to or greater than 25% and nine of these states had a prevalence of obesity equal to or greater than 30%. (www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/trends.html)
