Unit Three: Case Incident 2: Whistle Blowers: Saints or Sinners

MT302 Organizational Behavior

1)

Do you believe that whistle-blowing is good for organizations and its members, or is it, as David Stetler believes, often a means to extort financial gains from companies? Whistle blowing means calling attention to wrongdoing that is occurring within an organization.

According to C. Freud Albert, in his book “Whistleblower: Broken Lives and Organizational Power”, the whistleblower does not need to go public to get into trouble with the organization and that by merely mentioning his/her concerns, he/she brings an unwelcome public inside the organization. In his work it is mentioned as well that the only unforgettable organizational sin would be to become “the outside on the inside”.

It is uncertain under what circumstances whistle-blowing would be the right thing to do, and whom to report the illegal or unethical activities occurring within the organization.

It depends on different situations whether a whistle-blowing will have a positive or negative result over the organization.

In this case of Douglas Duran, a former VP of sales for TAP, it was the good ethics and his intuition that had to make him decide, act and correct the wrongdoing of the organization while using the precise process of decision-making and choose to go through the court system to punish the organization for what they have been doing to the insurance company.

I believe Duran is not guilty of unethical practices from extorting financial gains from TAP, because there were 500 boxes of evidence and a case settled that supported his statements and accusations.
