The tension between art and commerce in the filmmaking industry

Film making is an expensive affair. It is hence a balancing act of sorts because the cost has to be kept in check without affecting the quality of the film. In the article, this aspect of film making can be said to have been the one that caused a change in director. With a budget of $100 and the directors insisting that this amount could not be increased, the previous director, Mark Romanek saw this as enough reason to leave. We hence realize in moviemaking there has to be a balance between art and commerce.

Reliance of filmmaking to technology

From the article we also realize that film making relies somewhat heavily in technology. In this film about 200 visual effects scenes were added and there was the necessary computer labor that made the movies budget shoot to $120 million. This shows that despite the studio’s refusal to increase the budget earlier, this time round technology made the studio to rethink its earlier decision. This shows the reliance of filmmaking to technology.

Studio control of the movie industry

In this article it is also shown that much of film making is controlled by the studios. First we have a director leaving in a huff after a spat with the studio. Johnston brings out this aspect very well when he says that the main struggle for making a film for any studio is that the producers as well as the studio usually have the whole idea of what the movie should look like. This hence leaves little room for other players to exert their opinions. This issue hence shows the extent of control that studios have in the filmmaking industry.
