Ethics are not some new idea thought up for the world of today. Ethics came into being as man began to think and reason. Ethics are simply values that do not exclude any person in this world. Ethical values are based on religion, culture, political reasoning and so forth. Ethical decisions depend on making the correct choice when facing tempting alternatives.

Ethics are doing what one says he will do, stand up and do the right thing even when no one is around to see. One may lose wealth and recover, and may lose health and recover, but once a person loses a good name because of dishonesty, one can never restore a good reputation. When we are loyal, other trusts us. Communication is more open because people trust us to meet our obligations. Personal ethics are the internal guides that tell you what is right and wrong.

Many sources influence ethics including family. Culture can dictate the ethical norms that people expect. The culture you live in may affect your ethical code more than realized, simply because it surrounds you. The customs and traditions of your society become ingrained and are therefore a person accepts these ideas as normal or truths. Racism and other forms of prejudice can become an accepted part of a person’s ethical standards when surrounded by people who do it and allow it (Scivicque, 2007).

The ethical dilemma in my workplace is a problem that affects all levels of the society of Las Vegas. The State of Nevada and the alcohol industry has joined forces to pass a statute that requires all those employees in the bar and casino industries to take an alcohol awareness class, pass an examination and be fingerprinted before entering the business. This class is a daylong class effectively demonstrates the dangers of driving while impaired and the duties of those responsible for the bar or casino.
