TITLE OF THE

RESEARCH PAPER: How effective is the NPT instrument to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons?

ABSTRACT:

Since the cold war there has been an arms race between Russia and the US. There was a mutual obsession of destruction, the Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD). This refers to the capability to destroy lives not only one time but several times. The big obsession on the part on both sides was that at any moment there may be a possibility that one side will take the advantage. This created a development of the nuclear weaponry. The US was the first state to express the need to develop a system which would reduce and control the development of nuclear armament. The most significant treaty was the Non Proliferation Treaty.

In the paper one will assess the effectiveness of the nonproliferation treaty regarding the proliferation of nuclear weapons. the first part will provide an overview of the IAEA verification system. It will mention the safeguards system and the level of violations. The second part will focus on the challenges met by the treaty: the three states problem, non-compliance and withdrawal. It will also assess the viability of proposed measures to strengthen the treaty.

1) Introduction

The first concerns regarding nuclear proliferation were raised by the United States which was the first state nuclear weapon states. After the Second World War, the President Truman the ‘Baruch Plan’ which suggested to disarm completely the United States if other countries agreed not to acquire any nuclear technology.
