SOCRATES

I. Biography

Socrates was a classical Greek phylosopher with a nickname of Athenian Gadfly. He was born on 469 B.C in Athens and was dead during 399 B.C. His father's name was Soproniscus, a sculplor or Stonemason and his mother was Phaenarete, a midwife. He was married to Xanthippe who was younger than he. He was marreid at the age of 40 while his wife is 19. They has three sons namely, Lamprodes the eldest, Soproniscus and Menexenus the youngest. He studied literature, music, and gymnastics. Later he famliarized himself with the rhetoric and dialectics.

II. CONTRIBUTIONS

⦁ To the field of ethics.

-knowledge bearing on human life was placed highest and self knowledge was considered necessary for.

-A person must become aware of every fact relevant to his existence.

-He posited that people will naturally do what is good, if they know what is right. Evil or bad actions are the result of ignorance.
