Failure of the Symbian OS

Nokia as we all know used an Operating System called the SYMBIAN OS launched in 2002. The OS as at that time when it was introduced up to the time when the Android and Apple iOS operating system was introduced, it had good market response, sales was good because of the demand for Nokia's phone. When Android and iOS was introduced and launched in 2008, it took over the heart of the market completely, the Symbian OS could no longer compete with the other two because it was seen as outdated, obsolete and not user friendly by consumers. Android and IOS could create something unique such as series of applications and user interface which the market loved and Nokia was too slow to respond to this trend.

Sales began to drop drastically because of low demand of Nokia's phones, sales as the 4th quarter of 2008 was 12.7billion Euro, a drop down of 19% from the previous year but up to 3% in the 3rd quarter of 2008. In 2008, iPhone 3G caused Appleā€™s year-over-year market share to double up by the end of 2008 and iPhone OS operating system market share gained a competitive edge over Windows Mobile. In the fourth quarter of 2008, Nokia maintained a 40.8% share with a decline of over 10% from the fourth quarter of 2007 which was replaced by the continuous increase in Apple's share (Gartner, March 2009).

However, as the years went by, Nokia could not come up with a new strategy, It then made the greatest mistake by adopting the Windows phone OS in 2011 to compete with Android and IOS. The Lumia series would have captured the market if Nokia had adopted the use of the Android OS. 2012 marked the end of the Symbian OS after it was replaced by the Windows Phone (NDTV, January 2013). 100% ORIGINAL
