The FEASIBILITY OF Establishing an Environmentally Friendly Ship Dismantling Facility

ABSTRACT

The ship dismantling industry was created due to the growing demand for steel and the increasing number of obsolete ships around the world. It is a labor-intensive industry that grew after the end of the cold war. This industry is huge with immense potential.

The feasibility of ship-breaking is not only determined by the price of scrap metal, but also by the existence of markets for the recycled products and goods, and by the abundance of low-cost labor. This paper proposes a new layout of shipdismantling facility in China. And discussion is provided on the aspects of technique, operation and economic to achieve the goal of building an environmental ship dismantling facility. The information for China was collected during an informal visit to the ship dismantling sites in Chang Jiang Ship-Breaking Yard, China.

The new approaches are presented both on the construction design of the facility, like the position of the specific working area, etc, and the operation management, like the disposal of asbestos. Moreover, the economic analyse is performed based on the current market values in China and basic assumptions were made.
