There is a shortage of nurses in the United States which is not just something so simple
but critical. So critical that 8.5 percent of nursing positions are unfilled and it is supposed to
triple by the year of 2020 when baby boomers retire. It has been going on ten years with the
staffing crisis of nurses. Nurses are not paid as much as they should get, but recently the wages
did rase by 1.34 percent from the year of 2006-07’. The hospital administrators do find it a bit
difficult to retrieve answers as to the shortage of nurses. There are a possible reason of the
hospital control cost and insurance company reimbursement policies being the reason for less
pay for nurses. Honestly, nurses are needed as they are the ones who take care of the patients
daily needs. Nurses are also being brought in from other countries to work as an RN an there is
almost a third of them that makes up the RNs.
The reason for filling the hospital with non us workers is because it allows them to pay
them lower salary, this is most likely what non us workers expect as they may be getting paid
less from their recent job. Sources do state that this can only be a short term fix that can lead to
more problems in the future. By them hiring non us workers workers it stops the wage increase
that is suppose to motivate more folks in joining the force which is actually suppose to help the
nurse shortage. No one wants to work more than what they deserve. Sources say that increasing
the salary would bring more nurses in because it creates a promising career. While pay is one
issue, on the other hand the working conditions and understaffing are also other factors to deter
people from pursuing the career. The annual wage for nurse are right below $58,000 a year with
this being compared to the overall average salary of $36,000.

Most nurse see that pay as not enough.
