Roles and Functions

Managers in healthcare organizations have to be able to respond and adapt to the various changes within an organization. Managers are expected to be and are accountable for various aspects of the organization. Some of the responsibilities are staffing, making decisions, productivity, safety, overall performance, and the financial aspect of the organization, and maintaining confidentiality. As previously stated, these are just some managerial responsibilities.

Since managerial duties are multi faceted, it is common sense to have various levels of management within organizations. The various levels are designed to handle specific functions. In my opinion this is designed to be a form of checks and balances. Due to the nature of the healthcare environment, it is imperative the managerial aspect is performed as a team versus falling solely on one individual.

Managers are the ones who create and promote the type of work environment for the employees. The ideal working environment is one that is conducive to production and an overall positive outcome towards the organization’s goals. I would define the role and application of management functions used by today’s health care managers as multi-dimensional. A manager should be able to perform the tasks of their employees in addition to their own responsibilities. This is extremely important because there are times when employees may need assistance and the manager should not have any qualms about rolling up their sleeves and getting into the trenches.

In the health care setting, confidentiality or lack of can make or break an organization. With the sensitive nature of health care, patients expect and demand their personal information to be protected. When confidentiality is broken, it is very difficult to gain it back as it is similar to losing trust and faith.
