CORPORATE AND INFORMATION STSYEMS PLANNING

Although there are numerous motivations for carefully planning the identifiable and selection of projects, organizations have not traditionally used a systematic planning process when determining how to allocate IS resource. Instead, project has resulted from attempts to solve isolate organization programs. In effect, organization’s has asked the question, “What procedure is required to solve a particular problem?” The issue with this is that the procedure can change overtime as the environment changes. For example, a university method of billing may change the procedure of registering for classes. In contrast, planning based approaches essentially ask the question “What data requirements will satisfy the decision making needs, not only today, but in the long run? A major advantage os this approach is that the organization’s informational needs are less likely to change than its business processes. For example, unless an organization fundamentally changes its business, its underlying data structures may remain reasonably stable more than 10 years.

CORPORATE STRATEGIC PLANNING

A prerequisite for making effective project selection decision is to gain a clear idea of where an organization is, its vision of where it want to be in the future, and how to make the transition to its desired future state. The first step focuses on gaining an understanding of the current enterprise. If you don’t know where you are, you won’t know where you’re trying to go. Next, top management must determine where it wants the enterprise to be in the future. Finally, after gaining an understanding of the current and future enterprise, a strategic plan can be developed to guide this transition. The process of developing and refining models of the current and future enterprise as well as transition strategy is often referred to as corporate strategic planning.
