Boeing 787 Dreamliner Network Security
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is an amazing breakthrough in how travel is conducted in this day and age. Boeing has designed an aircraft that gives passengers the at home experience inside of a plane. There have been many issues with this process because of the security risks involved in wireless connections and safety to passengers. The FAA has required Boeing to show how secure their network will be in case of a hacker attack.
The Dreamliner will offer a wireless (Wi-Fi) connection while on the ground, but when in flight the aircraft will offer an Ethernet connection. The Dreamliner has three different wired on board networks. One of the networks is for safety and navigation. The second is for administrative functions and the third network handles all the passenger entertainment and internet access ("How to Hack Into a Boeing 787," 2008).
The benefits that can come from a common network for all onboard systems are that all the information is in one localized location making it easy to access all of the aircrafts information. Having a networked system is beneficial on other levels as well to include maintenance actions that need to be addressed within the aircraft and the communication of all the systems within the aircraft is made easier.
The security concern is a real life concern that affects not just the airline but its passengers and the public. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was concerned that with only a wireless connection that the aircraft would be susceptible to hacker attacks. The FAA was also concerned that even with an Ethernet connection that people would be able to access sensitive information about the aircraft. The FAA issued a special conditions request to Boeing because the FAA was not knowledgeable enough with this type of technology and needs to ensure that it will be safe. With all of this...
