Introduction

In the following paper I’m going to write about the video cancel cell research: the way of all flesh and about Henrietta locks who is the patients in the video I’m also going to give you the demographics about Henrietta locks and provide a summary of the researcher actions . I’m also going to explain which ethical principles in this research violated. Explains which diversity implications were involved.

Demographics

Henrietta Lacks an unsung, unnamed hero until later years has helped millions in the research of various diseases from polio, cancer, etc. Henrietta Lacks was born in Roanoke, Virginia with her birth name of Loretta Pleasant on August 01, 1920.A poor tobacco farmer, she along with her family worked in the same plantation owned fields of her great grandfather Benjamin Lacks that her slave ancestors worked for so many years until she moved her family to Baltimore, Maryland. She died of cervical cancer on October 04, 1951. In this ironic case cells were taken from her body without her knowledge and were used to create the “HeLA” cell line. This case caused legal and ethical debates nationwide over the rights an individual has over their genetic material and tissue.

Henrietta Lacks was born as Loretta Pleasant and somewhere along the line her name was changed to Henrietta. When she was a small child after her mother passed she was sent to live with relatives on her ancestor’s plantation in Clover, Virginia. Henrietta was surrounded by extended family members and eventually married her first cousin David Lacks in 1941, who she would go on to have five children with. The family relocated to Maryland in the same year at the suggestion of better work opportunities for David there at the ship yard in Maryland.
