Critical and Creative Thinking Questions

1. Sensation and perception are closely linked. What is the central distinction between the two?

There is a close relationship between sensation and perception. Sensation is the way we receive information through our five senses. These five senses include sight, smell, touch, hearing, and taste. Sensation is also how we relay the information to the brain through our sensory receptors. Neurons then will carry the information to the brain. On the other hand, perception is how we interpret that information and translate it from our sensory receptors to our real world environment (Carpenter, 2013, Chapter Chapter 4).

2. If we sensed and attended equally to each stimulus in the world, the amount of information would be overwhelming. What sensory and perceptual processes help us lessen the din?

If we sensed and attended equally to each stimulus in the world, the amount of information would be too overwhelming for us to handle. Fortunately, we have sensory receptors that are specialized in our brain to help with sensory reduction. Our sensory receptors are filtered and analyzed before being sent to the various parts of the brain. After the information travels to the brain there is a coding process. This coding process differentiates between the various stimuli and perceives this information and then sends that information to the various parts of the brain. This coding process helps lighten the load on the brain of having to deal with all the overwhelming amount of information sent at once (Carpenter, 2013, Chapter Chapter 4).

4. What senses, outside of hearing, would likely be impaired if a person were somehow missing all of the apparatus of the ear (including the outer, middle, and inner ear)?

If a person were missing all of the apparatus of their ear, they would have some impairments in senses other than...
