The concept of interpersonal relationship is influenced by one’s understanding of interpersonal communication, its principles, misconceptions and barriers. Interpersonal communication is a subset of communication in general, and collaboration, choices, culture, identities and conversation are all principles of interpersonal communication. These principles and others such as self-concept, emotional intelligence, and self-perception will be the focus of this paper. This kind of communication defined as “interpersonal” doesn’t happen all the time, but it can take place in families, between friends, during an argument, in business situations, online or even during speeches and presentations. In addition, having a strong self-perception and knowing the principles of interpersonal interaction is essential to communicating effectively. It is imperative to understand how to manage conflicts and be able to develop and apply emotional intelligence to interpersonal communication so that one’s self concept and ability to communicate in a powerful manner will culminate.

The main characteristic of interpersonal communication is that the people involved are contacting each other as persons. The abounding interpersonal relationships we have with others not only define who we are but also reflect the perception that others have of us. In addition, how we communicate with those we hold relationships with affects the happiness and success we experience in life, (Rao, R., 2010). We prosper from our relations with others and we consistently depend on our ways of relating and communicating to assure us of our place in this world.

We thrive when we communicate well, and we starve ourselves of companionship, camaraderie and community when we fail to communicate effectively.
