SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND & FACTS

Guy Laliberte, Gilles Saint-Croix and Daniel Gauthier in Montreal, Canada founded cirque Du Soleil in 1984. A way to understand this organization is to know its history, they started off as a street band with a group of 20 street performers, clowns, acrobats, and gymnasts that incorporate opera, dance, theatre and circus with live music, choreography and pyrotechnics. It was a circus without animals. They operated with only 73 performers; by 2001 they employed over 2,100 performers worldwide. From 1984 to 1989 they performed to an audience of 270,000 only performing one show at a time. In 2001 over 6 million people saw Cirque du Soleil show. It was not until 2002, that they started organizing eight productions running over four continents. To date approximately 150 million people have attended a Cirque du Soleil show in 300 cities throughout six continents. It is estimated that 15 million people will see a Cirque du Soleil show in 2014. It now employs more than 4000 people 1,300 of them are performers, this allows for numerous shows to be performed in different parts of the world at the same time. (Cirque Du Soleil)

The success of Cirque du Soleil is thought to be due to the professional approach and scrupulous selection of the talented and well-trained performers who capture the attention of every spectator, and putting in place a Blue Ocean Strategy. Where they created their own market, a place where there was no competition or similarities. Cirque du Soleil is now known all over the world, they achieved this globalization when they left Canada in 1987 and headed to California. They risked everything they had when they came to California. If it didn’t work out they wouldn’t even have enough money to return to Canada, their luck changed and by 1990 they were able to finance their first European production.
