Leadership Style

Each person has their own leadership style which can be as unique as their personality. There is no right or wrong way to lead, but understanding one’s style helps them to be a better leader. They are able to understand what characteristics are present in their style and how well they are able to adapt to changes. These qualities are important for a successful leader.

George Washington

Often referred to as “The Father of our Country”, George Washington was no doubt a great and charismatic leader. His leadership style was able to adapt to changes depending on the role he was called to fill. He exhibited unique characteristics as a General in the military, and again as President. Washington’s ability to quickly adapt his style of leadership to what the situation demanded was unmatched.

As a military leader Washington was very tough, persistent, and brave. Leading men into battle in a hostile environment with few supplies are obstacles that are difficult to overcome for anyone. Washington suffered the same hardships and limitations as the men he led. They saw this and knew he understood their problems. He was able to use this as a motivational tool because his men were willing to follow him anywhere he asked. (Stazesky, 2000)

Washington was reluctant to accept the presidency of the United States but was talked into accepting by Thomas Jefferson among others (Constitutional Rights Foundation, 1984). He had no education nor was he a good writer or speaker but was still one of the greatest presidents. He preferred a mediation role during debates and arguments and was excellent at maintaining people’s focus on the job at hand. He was very calm and calculating, gathering as much information as possible before making a decision. Washington knew that timing was key and had the patience to wait until the right time before executing a plan.
