Living Abroad

When I arrived to start my studies, everything seemed new and strange to me. By now, the excitement I had of moving to a new world had subsided due to the many challenges I faced in trying to move into my new home in Seattle. According to John and James, attending global classrooms may pose significant challenges to foreign students (53). Previously, I had not objectively thought of living abroad as I focussed on identifying a chance to advance my studies. God had heard my prayers and granted my wish to study abroad. In the first few days after leaving my home in Riyadh for Seattle, I felt lonely and homesick due to the absence of my family support. The experience of leaving one’s homeland to study abroad needs the support of friends and family. Family ties are an important challenge when it comes to geographical mobility in education (Wendy 61). My resolve to change my perception on relationships and to develop new healthy friendships helped me to overcome my fear of the unknown. This paper highlights the ways in which foreign students can change their mindset to tackle fear of the unknown and challenges that they face.

The main reason and objective of studying abroad should be the motivating factor in empowering foreign students face their fears and challenges. Studying abroad presents endless opportunities that can help a student achieve their goals. These opportunities come with a myriad of difficulties that often dampen the motivation of the students (Slimbach 34). However, the conviction to achieve and patriotism to their home country can keep them on track and optimistic to overcome challenges they face. The desire to acquire skills that I can use to improve my home country will help alter my mindset and view of my new surroundings.
