Abstract

The millennium has giving us new technologies and on the flip side, more sophisticated tools that hackers use to probe, spy, and breech even the most secured government networks. One major area of attacks is focused on web applications and is growing. So, security is becoming more and more important and businesses and government agencies are realizing its importance. Hardware defenses and software tools needs to be even more advanced to defend against injection and script attacks. Businesses need to understand and create, educate their employees of the various vectors of attacks. Create a culture of, not only confidence, but security awareness; no matter where you are in the world, at home or at the airport, you’re susceptible to being a target. This will be a review of security risks in web applications and mitigating factors to introduce mitigating tools to fight and defend against the growing threat at home and abroad.

Introduction

Around 40% of the world population has an internet connection today. Back in 1993, there were approximately 14 million users. In the year of 2000, there were approximately 413,425,190 million internet users, a 47% growth rate from 1993. Today, there are approximately 3,141,430,441 billion users on the planet connected to the internet (Internet Live Stats, 2015). “Without security measures and controls, data might be prone to an attack such as alteration of information in order to corrupt or destroy the data or the network itself…alteration of information” (Vijayan, 2009). As the world continues to spin, so do attacks to web applications. Not all networks are created equally, meaning that some companies put more emphasis on security and others do not.
