CHAPTER ONE - INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

The Bachelor of Accounting degree program is designed to train professionals that will

provide accounting, auditing, finance, tax and business management skills to industry,

commerce, government and other sectors that may require such services in Zimbabwe, Africa

and the globe. Graduates from Midlands State University’s Accounting department have for

many years gained a reputation of quality and excellence in serving industry and commerce.

In order to improve the quality of the degree program Midlands State University’s

Accounting department introduced one-year industrial attachment for its Bachelor of

Accounting honours degree as a response to the need to expose its students to practical

industrial requirements.

All students of the department are therefore required to complete at least ten months attached

to an organisation where they are exposed to practical accounting training thus allowing them

to put into practise their theoretical accounting knowledge.

1.2 Objectives

The industrial attachment program was introduced in order to meet the following objectives:

a) To enable students to put into practise the theoretical concepts learnt in the first two

years of their studies.

b) To afford students the opportunity to develop hands on experience of accounting and

business practises.

c) To allow students to gain exposure on the behaviours and practises of organisations.

d) To enable organisations to play an active role in the training of future business

leaders.

e) To solicit feedback from commerce and industry on the relevance and quality of the

bachelor of accounting degree.

f) To afford students the opportunity to identify, develop and sharpen their

entrepreneurial skills.
