Abstract

Drug abuse in pregnancy has been one of the most complex public-health issue with potentially unpleasant impact on the mother, fetus and extending to the forming child. Early detection which can be done by screening all pregnant mothers and those anticipating being pregnant should be a top priority. This paper will largely focus on the effects and management of illicit drug consumption during pregnancy as well as the statics of the population being affected by drug usage. The use of assessment tools can be of great help in giving insights on the future planning. Management needs a well coordinated approach that ensures swift individualized care.

Introduction

Drug exploitation in pregnancy is a complex public health issue. Drug addiction in pregnant woman is one of the major problems facing American society. Actually, a big percentage of countries face this menace today. Measures have been undertaken to fight drug abuse, and, for sure, some changes have been evident. However, this problem is still evident, and more shockingly, it exists in pregnant women as well.

Today, Americans are losing their careers, families, pregnancies and even their lives due to the abuse of drugs (Lowinson, 2005). When a mother becomes pregnant, it is important she adapts a healthy lifestyle to safeguard the life of her baby. This includes but not limited to, eating healthy foods, getting plenty of rest and exercising regularly. For a pregnant woman, drug abuse is twice dangerous as it affects her and the developing child. All illegal drugs pose a great danger to a pregnant woman. Even legal drugs such as tobacco, alcohol and prescribed drugs can cause severe complications to the developing child.
