Distinguishing between mystical and numinous religious experience, contrast Hinduism and Buddhism from the perspective outlined by Ninian Smart. Why do you agree or disagree with Smart's distinction of the two kinds of religious experience as these relate to these two religions?

The Pursuit of The Eternal

The distinction between mystical and numinous religious experiences is the location of the “Eternal.” According to Smart, a numinous religion observer seeks to make contact with the divine entity that resides outside of the human self. This is accomplished by practicing a spiritual discipline or worship designed to facilitate communication with the Eternal. However, while a mystical religion observer also seeks to commune with and worship the Eternal, they would believe that instead of outside the human self, they would instead look within themselves.

If we compare the practice of Hinduism and Buddhism, we are able to see how the theory of Smart is carried out. Both religions are similar and even have shared pedigrees. Where we start to see a contrast is when we examine both religions interpretation of the pursuit of the Eternal.

Central to the Hinduism is the Supreme Reality – The Creator, Eternal, Omnipresent, and Omnipotent. The goal of the Hindu is a union of the soul with this entity and to secure both worldly joys and supreme happiness. This perspective is achieved by living out good Dharma (life mission). Through the pursuit of good Karma, a Hindu is able to achieve closer communion with the eternal. Over time and lives (a central tenant of Hinduism is the concept of reincarnation), a Hindu is able to advance their position until they achieve full communion or “oneness”. The dharmic path contains four aspects: austerity, purity, compassion, and truthfulness. If a Hindu’s good actions in these areas outweigh the bad, they will move closer to final union.
