Similarities and differences between administrative health systems and clinical health systems

The health information system (HIS) is a group of systems that support a healthcare setting such as a hospital, company or corporate setting. A HIS can be subdivided into clinical information systems and administrative health system. Both systems have similarities and differences that make them interdependent but unique.
Administrative information systems (AIS) are used to support client care by managing demographic information, financial aspects as well as reporting information about clients. Administrative information systems can be used to support business but are not limited to facets for billing, payroll, client management, human resources and quality assurance. Administrative health care systems are those systems in place to support and help manage a health care institution; they support clinical health systems. According to McHaney (n.d.), the systems included in AIS are nonclinical patient activities (e.g. Scheduling, admissions, transfers, census), medical records activities (e.g. Coding, procedure abstraction and transcription), accounting/business activities (e.g. Billing, insurance verification, accounts payables and receivables), and nursing management activities (e.g. Staff scheduling software, performance and education records, budget).
In contrast, clinical information systems (CIS) include a group of systems that are involved with and support direct patient care. A clinical information system can include electronic medical records which allow health care professionals to access them and manage direct patient care and interaction. A CIS usually supports health care aspects as related to direct patient involvement. This can include entities such as primary care, any subspecialty, surgical areas as well as any imaging component.
