W’Up: A Case for Vendor-Managed Inventory

The supply chain management concept of vendor-managed inventory (“VMI”) has, in recent years, been gaining popularity in Western markets. Within India, and likely most developing world countries, the concept of VMI is less prevalent. The feasibility of implementing VMI to any degree in India or similar countries likely depends on the successful partnering of numerous constituents throughout the supply chain.

Case Study Summary

W’Up Bottlery is a plant in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh in India owned by parent company Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Private Limited. W’Up is one of four plants that serve the Uttar Pradesh region. In addition to Coca-Cola, the plant makes several other drinks, including ThumsUp, Limca, Fanta, Sprite, and an assortment of juices, sodas, and waters.
