The Human Resource Manager and Managing Multiple Responsibilities

1. Human resource management consists of numerous activities. What areas were illustrated by Sam’s schedule on this particular day?

The areas that were illustrated were interviewing, problem solving, attending meetings, and tending to employee dissatisfaction reports. During this particular day Sam interviewed applicants and offered lunch as a HR management activity, he then solved the problem of payroll management system. Sam attended meetings for quality control and took some time to address employee grievances. He also attended a production meeting with the production superintendent, and finally a meeting with personnel management regarding employee matters.

2. List the areas of ineffective management that are affecting Sam.

Sam’s time was robbed firstly by Cecil Hardy; the plant engineer, who interrupted Sam’s interview to discuss irrelevant matters regarding a golf game they had played on Saturday. Secondly, the quality control conference he attended had run overtime and this extra time he spend at the meeting made him less effective. Lastly Sam spent time tracking down a Boy Scout troop who was selling advertisements.

3. Discuss Sam’s career progress. Is he promotable?

No, I do not feel that Sam is ready for a higher position. Although Sam has gained the title of manager he still lacks organizational traits for him to advance. In his current position he was unable to implement MBO in his daily activities. When dealing with employee grievances; he was unable to handle the matters in a timely matter and the issue had caught the attention of the Vice President of personnel. Instead of finding solutions before the problem gets out of hand, Sam seems to tackle problems one by one as they arise. I feel that once Sam learns to grasp the concept of time management, problem solving, and multitasking he will be ready for promotion.
