Scenario 1: Terminating an employee.

Francesca is a supervisor for a small team of male and female employees at a professional health and human services organization. She has been an employee at this office for 3 years, and in the supervisory position for the past 2 years. She is known as a person who follows rules, and treats everyone fairly. Recently Francesca placed an employee on probation for violating a known company policy. The employee has received additional training on this policy and has been given a written warning stating she will be terminated if found violating the policy again. Yesterday another supervisor came to Francesca to report that the employee violated the policy again, which warrants termination. Francesca needs to communicate the termination to the employee.

Answer the following questions (In 1-2 sentences) to help formulate your communication strategy.

A. Who is the communicator? Francesca will be the communicator. She will be communicating to the employee the reason why they are being terminated.

B. What is the general communication objective for this scenario?

The objective will be for Francesca to inform the employee they are being terminated for a continual policy violation. This is a policy that the employee is already on probation for violating, but has not resulted in a change in behavior.

C. Which communication style(s) (Tell, Sell, Consult, Join) should the communicator use and why? Francesca should use the “Tell” communication style because there is no need for additional input or collaboration. The employee will be told they are terminated and why.

D. Who is the audience in this communication?

The employee that will be terminated is the intended audience for the communication. The employee will receive the information that they are being terminated from Francesca.
