1) Transactional analysis is a branch of psychotherapy that was developed by Eric Berne. Berne’s definition for TA is that it’s a theory of personality and systematic psychotherapy for personal growth and change.

2) An ego state is a consistent pattern of feeling and experience directly related to a corresponding consistent pattern of behavior. Berne defined three ego states that can be confirmed by observable behavior: the parent, adult, or child.

3) The three ego states defined starting with parent – which represents a massive collection of recordings in the brain of external events experienced or perceived in approximately the first five years of life. Second is child, this is in contrast to the Parent, the Child represents the recordings in the brain of internal events associated with external events the child perceives. The Adult is the last ego state. Close to one year of age, a child begins to exhibit gross motor activity. The child learns that he or she can control a cup from which to drink, that he or she can grab a toy. In social settings, the child can play peek-a-boo.

4) The transaction is crossed; communication is non effective. A crossed transaction could lead to argument and loss of effective communication. The message is 'lost'.

5) If communication is from Adult to Adult then it is likely to be the most effective communication for most of our communications.
