The Art of Professionalism

Professionalism is the skill acquired in the field of work that categorizes us as professionals. Hernando the author of Just Lather, That’s All values professionalism as shown through The Barber. The Barber takes perfection, honour and devotion he has for his work. These characteristics show his professionalism in his field of work. Hernando incorporates these characteristics into The Barber to show his value of professionalism.

Throughout the story The Barber shows his preciseness in his work. When shaving Torres’ beard he makes sure not to make a mistake. “... to shave that beard like any other one, carefully gently,... ,taking pains not to see that no single pore emitted a drop of blood.”(Tellez 2). The Barber shows professionalism by doing his job perfectly. This shows Hernando’s value for professionalism by great effort and skill The Barber has in not letting any mistakes happen. Hernando expresses professionalism through The Barber by his devotion for his profession. An example is when he decides not to kill Captain Torres. “You are an executioner and I am only a barber. Each person has his own place in the scheme pf the things.”(Tellez 4). The Barber is devoted to his work. This encapsulates Hernando’s value for professionalism by not letting The Barber’s beliefs get caught up with his work. Hernando value for professionalism is portrayed in The Barber in the pride he has in his work. In the scene where The Barber is deciding to kill Captain Torres or not he decides not because he believes he should finish his work with honour. “And I perform my work honourably...” (Tellez 4). The Barber has great admiration and respect for what he does and decides not to kill Captain Torres because of that. This shows Hernando value for professionalism...
