In chapter 3 of RTV it discussed civil religion. One of the critiques was that founders of Christianity and Islam in some of their writings advocate for violence if it helps create peace. This would also ensure that religion would only be minimalist although we have already discussed that it can be maximalist too. There is also room from my perspective that civil religion that people can peacefully enforce the beliefs of their religion too. This is shown in chapter 4. I think the purpose of the chapter is to state that violence does not always come from evil. Sometimes it comes from an attempt to create peace. To purely call someone evil comes from a perspective stance. Bush wanted to lead the fight against “Terrorism” which was associated with evil from that justification. As someone who studies this, I can understand where both sides come from, but am not sure if either side is truly more right than the other for the justification behind their actions.

In class today we discussed how people commemorate violence. One of the topics discussed that I connected with well was the music and film. In I did a project on the song “Fortunate Song” by the Creedence Clearwater Revival that reminded me of this slide. In summary, the song talks about the draftees who aren’t fortunate enough to pay their way out of fighting in the Vietnam War. This song to me has a more informative theme to it rather than making people sad. In essence this song could be made to call Americans to action about the injustice happening to soldiers fighting for their country. I agreed in class with the suggestion made by Dr. Tite when he said that the incorporation of music with YouTube has almost made the music more visual to people so they can relate with it better.
