Secrets Behind the Wall

Along with its search for wealth, the Spanish colonizers made it a top mission to spread Catholicism in the Philippines. And to broaden the reach of Christianity, a place for worship is needed to bring congregation together. As a result, churches were built around the country for Christianity to thrive. One of these churches was the San Agustin Church. San Agustin Church is concealed behind the walled city of Intramuros built by the Spaniards. The church is now recognized as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Philippines. Upon looking in its photos showing its structure, I asked, "how did this church become one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site?" Because as what I've seen, it's just stone built by the Spaniards. For me, it doesn't differ from any other churches. There might be a confusion. But then they said that San Agustin Church is the same church declared as World Heritage Site in 1993. They also said that this church has a significant monumento because it was the first structure built in the island of Luzon. It is one of the oldest standing buildings in Manila and had withstood numerous earthquakes and survived the British Invasion, the Spanish-American War, and the Japanese Invasion. As I continue looking at its picture, I was shocked because I didn't expect that the interior of the church will look fascinating. The design is a legacy of Spanish architecture in the baroque style. It has a magnificent trompe l'oeil murals covering the walls and the ceiling. Indeed, a nice place to visit and a good place for weddings too. I believe that people are just like this church.
