Evaluation of a Business Code of Ethics

Over the years many organizations have adopted their own code of ethics based on individual company values, morals, and beliefs. Even though some companies do not have a set code of ethics implemented into their company policies and procedures it has been a positive aspect to those companies that do acknowledge the importance of business ethics and are implemented into company policies and procedures such as those demonstrated with United Health Group (UHG). This paper will discuss United Health Group’s overall code of ethics and mission statement, ethical system used by the firm, how company ethics are utilized, and why the existing code of ethics need modification. In addition, possible reactions from all employees due to changes in codes, and effects of organizational culture in acceptance to the new codes are also analyzed.

Summary of United Health Group and Mission Statement

United Health Group’s (UHG) sole mission is to help people live healthier lives and making the health system work better for everyone (United Health Group, 2014). The values of the organization include integrity and compassion, in which they never compromise ethics but rather honor commitments. Personal and institutional integrity is the key to United Health Group’s success. The commitment honored by the organization encourages consumers, customers, business partners, and other institutions whether inside or outside the healthcare industry (United Health Group, 2014). UHG seeks to enhance the health care system by improving the overall health and well-being to those they serve within the community. This organization holds the highest standards of ethical behavior and has the courage to acknowledge mistakes. When or if mistakes occur they address them immediately so they do not lose the trust of the people they serve.
